Felix Zwayer to Referee England vs Netherlands Despite Past Controversies
Borussia Dortmund Player's Comments Led to Suspension
German referee Felix Zwayer has been appointed to officiate the Euro 2024 semi-final clash between England and the Netherlands on Wednesday. However, Zwayer's past involvement in a controversial incident has raised eyebrows.
WEB Bellingham's Comments and Zwayer's Suspension
In December 2021, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined €40,000 for comments he made about Zwayer following his team's 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. Bellingham had accused Zwayer of lacking "courage and integrity" on social media.
Zwayer received a hail of criticism following Bellingham's comments and was subsequently handed a two-month officiating ban by the German Football Federation (DFB).
Previous Ban and History with Bellingham
Zwayer previously served a six-month ban in 2006 for working as an assistant referee alongside Robert Hoyzer, who was convicted of match-fixing. Notably, Bellingham referenced this ban in his comments after the Bayern Munich match.
