World Environment Day: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience

Pakistan to Host Global Event

Ecosystem Restoration: An Urgent Call to Action

As the world marks World Environment Day on June 5, the spotlight shines brightly on the pressing environmental challenges of our time. This United Nations international day has become a global platform to raise awareness and inspire action towards protecting our planet. In 2021, the theme called for urgent global action to revive our damaged ecosystems. This year's theme, Ecosystem Restoration, underscores the importance of restoring the balance between humans and nature, with Pakistan acting as the global host.

Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience are interconnected issues that pose significant threats to our planet. Land restoration focuses on restoring degraded land to its natural state, increasing biodiversity and improving soil quality. Desertification, on the other hand, refers to the degradation of land in dry areas due to climate change, overgrazing, and deforestation. Drought is a prolonged period of below-average precipitation that can have devastating impacts on agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems.

World Environment Day aims to inspire more people than ever before to take action to prevent the growing strain on planet Earth's natural systems from human activities. By highlighting the importance of land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, the UN hopes to mobilize global efforts towards creating a sustainable and resilient future for all.
